Client: Red River College
Contractors: The Princess Street Consortium Inc. – Corbett
Cibinal Architects, A. Ackman & Son and ADA Holdings.
Project: Provide mechanical services for the $31.5 M construction of the Red River
College Princess Street Campus in Winnipeg, Manitoba
Derksen Group Involvement:
- Derksen Plumbing and Heating Ltd. (1984)
- BSD
- East Side Ventilation
- Tech Air
Scope: The Derksen Group was contracted by the consortium
to provide complete mechanical services for the new and renovated building of
the downtown campus in conformance with C2000 environmental standards. Work
began in late October 2001 and is scheduled for completion in September 2003.
Challenges: In addition to working on new the newly
constructed buildings, Derksen made modifications to accommodate existing
heritage building envelopes. By working with the project engineers, they
ensured appropriate pressure levels for exhaust and fresh air in a building
structure that was originally designed to draw outside air in by means of
balancing fresh air and exhaust air relative to outdoor pressure. They also
installed controls and dampers throughout to allow fresh air circulation to be
determined by actual occupant loads throughout the day, rather than basing it
on industry design standards.
This had to be done keeping not only the stringent
requirements of C2000 in mind but also maintaining a capital budget.
Results:
"We chose who we wanted to work with, and chose
Derksen for their reputation and the their ability to do design/build work to
keep within budget. They're honest and straightforward. A project of this
nature has plenty of challenges and the information they've given has provided
us with the valuable insight of a mechanical contractor. All the project
backers (the Princess Street Consortium) are happy, and we're in the process of
doing more work with the Derksen Group."
- Wayne Hayward, Construction Manager
"We've had a very positive experience working with the
Derksen Group. They do what they say they're going to do, are very capable and
have a good team of people behind them to make sure the job gets done. They
overcame the challenges of the budget and schedule, thanks to the depth of
their experience and expertise. They've honoured every one of their promises
and commitments."
